Omega-3 fish oil supplements decrease symptoms of depression and the risk of dementia.
Researchers in Australia recruited 50 people over the age of 65 to participate in a six month double blind, randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Compared to the groups receiving the omega-6 supplement, linoleic acid, the group receiving the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA showed improvements in depression and verbal fluency. The improved verbal fluency decreases the risk of developing dementia.
A third group receiving a higher amount of DHA demonstrated more pronounced improvements in both the depression and verbal fluency than the higher EPA group.
According to this and a few other recent studies, it appears DHA may be more important for brain health and function than EPA.
Since the brain is 60% fat, the omega-3 fatty acid DHA is a core product in our Flourish Brain Center.
