Researchers in Australia recruited 50 people over the age of 65 to participate in a six month double blind, randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Compared to the groups receiving the omega-6 supplement, linoleic acid, the group receiving the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA showed improvements in depression and verbal fluency. The improved verbal fluency decreases the risk of developing dementia.

A third group receiving a higher amount of DHA demonstrated more pronounced improvements in both the depression and verbal fluency than the higher EPA group.

According to this and a few other recent studies, it appears DHA may be more important for brain health and function than EPA.

In a study of more than 36,000 women between the ages of 49 and 83 researchers evaluated the dietary antioxidant intake in their diet. Women with the highest dietary antioxidant intake and no heart or blood vessel disease had a 17% lower risk of stroke. Women with the highest dietary antioxidant intake and a history of heart or blood vessel disease had up to a 57% lower risk of bleeding stroke.

Vegetables and fruits contributed about 50% of the antioxidants for the women. Whole grains provided about 18%, tea 16%, and chocolate 5% of the dietary antioxidants.

How much is enough? For adults and adolescents I typically recommend consuming one cup of vegetables at each of the three meals and a cup of fruit for two to three snacks each day. Yes, that’s 5 to 6 cups of vegetables and fruit each day. This amount has been shown in many medical studies to decrease the risk of many diseases including cancer and heart disease.

The MIDAS (Memory Improvement with Docosahexaenoic Acid Study) was a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study with 485 subjects that evaluated the effects of DHA supplementation on improving cognitive functions in older adults with are-related cognitive decline.

The study found that DHA taken for six months improved memory and learning in healthy, older adults with mild memory problems.

Source: The November, 2011 edition of Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association.

Lower DHA levels are associated with cognitive decline in healthy elderly and Alzheimer’s patients. Higher DHA levels help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.

As with most supplements, you will obtain the most benefit from your DHA when it is taken over time and before a health concern is imminent.
Clinical Nutrition Pearl

Most people should avoid supplements with copper. Elevated levels of copper increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and most cancers. A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine claims senior women taking supplements with copper have an 18% increased risk of early death.

The same study found taking folic acid increases the risk of early death by over 4%. Research also demonstrates folic acid increases the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer.

We recommend taking active forms of B vitamins. Over 50% of the population have a genetic problem converting Folic Acid into the active 5-methytetrahyrofolate, B12 (cyanocobalamin) into the active methylcobalamin, or B6 (pyridoxine) into the active pyridoxal 5’ phosphate (P5P).

Take supplements that don’t have copper and folic acid! One example is our Vital Multiple Vitamin.

7 Step Flourish Natural Wellness Center Memory Program:
1. Test blood vessel and heart function with our DynaPulse test – poor circulation to the brain causes memory problems
2. Test homocysteine level – elevated homocysteine levels damage blood vessels and causes memory problems
3. Do a urine test for oxidative damage and toxic metals including copper, lead and mercury
4. Obtain or evaluate comprehensive blood tests
5. Nutrition physical and history
6. Design a customized supplement program based on all of the above
a. We avoid supplements with copper
b. We provide supplements with active forms of B vitamins
7. Repeat tests as indicated and adjust program

Side Note:
I just talked to a client on my Memory Program. After 2 months he and his family have noticed significant improved memory, mental function and vision. Yes, even his vision has improved! Both the eyes and brain require good circulation to function properly.

Bipolar Clinical Nutrition Pearl

I’ve been using high doses of omega-3 fish oils successfully for bipolar depression since 2001 when doctors first reported their research. It takes about 3,000 mg of EPA each day to see an improvement bipolar depression results. That means you should take 4 to 10 fish oil capsules each day, depending on the strength of your fish oil. We have purified, pharmaceutical grade, extra strength fish oil capsules that will decrease the number of capsules you have to take.

A study of more than 50,000 U.S. women for 10 years found increased coffee consumption decreased depression risk by 20%.

The 50,739 women with an average age of 63 and who were free of depression at baseline in 1996, had 15% less chance of developing depression symptoms if they drank 2 -3 cups of caffeinated coffee each day.

The women who drank 4 cups of caffeinated coffee each day were 20% less likely to develop depression.

Consumption of decaffeinated coffee was not linked to reduced levels of depression.

Researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago found functional assessments of vitamin B12 status, but not vitamin B12 levels themselves, were associated with lower cognitive tests scores and smaller brain volume. Lower cognition and smaller brain volume are significant risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

Blood samples, memory tests and brain MRIs of 121 people over 65 were analyzed at the beginning of this medical study and four and a half years later. Researchers stated, “Concentrations of all vitamin B12 related markers, but not serum vitamin B12 itself, were associated with global cognitive function and with total brain volume.”

Functional tests of vitamin B12 include methylmalonic acid and homocysteine. Low methylmalonic acid and elevated homocysteine indicates low vitamin B12 usage by the body.

In this study low methylmalonic acid was associated with poor memory while elevated homocysteine was associated with deceased brain volume.

Low methylmalonic acid and elevated homocysteine occur in people who are either not getting enough vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), not absorbing their vitamin B12 or due to genetic metabolism issues cannot convert vitamin B12 into the methylcobalamin. Methylcobalamin is the active form of vitamin B12 that is used in the body.

Normal vitamin B12 levels with low methylmalonic acid and elevated homocysteine levels indicate an issue with converting vitamin B12 into methylcobalamin.

Methylcobalamin is found in most of our high quality dietary supplements.

Are you getting enough vitamin B12 or methylcobalamin? Find out and make corrections!

Teenage volunteers either skipped breakfast or consumed 500 calories breakfast meals containing cereal and milk (normal protein) or higher protein meals such as Belgium waffles, syrup and yogurt. Right before lunch the volunteers completed a brain scan, using functional MRI, to identify brain activation responses.

The group consuming a high protein breakfast experienced a greater change in appetite, feeling full and reward-driven eating behavior compared to the normal protein breakfast group and the group that skipped breakfast.

Researchers stated “Incorporating a healthy breakfast containing protein-rich foods can be a simple strategy for people to stay satisfied longer, and therefore, be less prone to snacking. These finding suggest that a protein-rich breakfast might be an effective strategy to improve appetite control and prevent overeating in young people."

Each person needs 15 – 25 grams of protein at each meal (15 grams for smaller women to 25 grams larger men). Read your food labels and do the math to see if you are getting enough protein. Oatmeal may have only 4-5 grams, 1 cup of milk 6 grams, 1 egg 6 grams, cereal 2-3 grams.

This is not a high protein diet! The RDA of protein is 50 grams per day for adults. I think larger men should be getting 75 grams or more per day while smaller women should be getting 50 grams.

I typically have a protein fruit smoothie or 3 eggs and fruit or oatmeal with protein powder for breakfast.

S-Acetyl Glutathione is a patent-pending, odor-free, tasteless, oral, acetylated form of glutathione that is stable throughout the digestive tract and is well absorbed. Study has confirmed that S-Acetyl Glutathione increased intracellular glutathione and had a positive effect on many oxidative stress biomarkers.

The “Master Antioxidant” Glutathione functions extensively in tissues and organs throughout the body. It plays critical roles in protecting the body from oxidative stress, maintaining cellular functions, and supporting healthy immune function.

The presence of heavy metals, foreign microbes, tissue trauma, inflammatory compounds, and oxidative stressors impairs glutathione/antioxidant function, ultimately leading to a fierce cycle of increased inflammation and oxidative stress. Mutating cells or those in uncontrolled replication, as well as cells that are being challenged by foreign
microbes, are shown to have altered glutathione status.

Depletion of glutathione may result in insufficient detoxification and increased susceptibility to oxidation, in part because glutathione is also needed to maintain exogenous antioxidants such as vitamins C and E in their reduced (active) forms. This incomplete biotransformation and loss of antioxidant protection leaves cells and tissue vulnerable to irreversible damage. Indeed, many disease states occur when reduced glutathione is low.

The British Medical Journal evaluated the relation between vitamin D3 blood levels and the risk of colorectal cancer. The study involved 1,248 cases of colorectal cancer and 1,248 patients with similar health history but no colorectal cancer. Patients with the highest vitamin D3 levels had a 40% lower risk of colorectal cancer than did those with the lowest blood level.

Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin that is present in very few foods and available as a dietary supplement. Vitamin D3 is made by the body when sunlight strikes the skin and triggers vitamin D3 production.
A vitamin D3 blood level test is the only way to know how much you should take. The test costs $75 and is as simple as a finger stick blood drop test at home. Place blood drops on a test pad and drop the kit in the mail. The $75 Blood Spot test kit is available through our pharmacy.

A low level of vitamin D3 is a risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes type 1 and 2, depression, high blood pressure and most cancers except Glioblastoma and Pancreatic Cancer. The $75 Blood Spot test and adjusting your vitamin D3 supplement dose could be the best investment in your health you could ever make.

This double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized medical trial included 52 volunteers who either received 365 mg of magnesium daily or placebo for six months. Study results revealed that insulin sensitivity improved significantly following magnesium supplementation. Fasting glucose levels improved by about 7% in the magnesium group. Magnesium plays a significant role in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes in overweight people.

It’s estimated that the typical American gets only ½ of the Recommended Daily Intake of magnesium. Magnesium is used in over 300 different processes in the human body.

Magnesium is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses, temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production and the formation of healthy bones and teeth. It is also vital for cardiovascular health and blood pressure control.

Magnesium supplements should be taken with food to increase absorption. Stomach acid is necessary to absorb magnesium. I you are taking an acid blocker you should make an appointment so that I can maximized your magnesium absorption.

The 2nd step in magnesium absorption is vitamin D3 attachment and delivery through the intestinal wall. You should also get your vitamin D3 blood level ($75 test).

Anxiety and depression was five times greater in the patients with hypothyroidism in comparison to the control group. Researchers suggested that depressed patients should be tested for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).

Keith’s Insight
This is another example that demonstrates any health issue can have several influencing factors. It’s better to evaluate the body as a whole rather give a drug or herb to treat a symptom. Most people are being treated for a disease symptom without getting to the cause of the problem.

TSH by itself is not good enough to evaluate thyroid function. The best way to evaluate thyroid function is to test TSH, Free T3 (active thyroid hormone), Free T4 (inactive made by the thyroid hormone) and TPO (thyroid antibody). These tests are available from your doctor or our Natural Wellness Clinic.

A study published in the American Journal of Medicine found high dose of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) helped overweight people with high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol lose weight. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 360 people.

Subjects were randomly given alpha-lipoic acid 1200 mg per day or 1800 mg per day or placebo for 20 weeks. The group taking the placebo did not lose weight. The group taking 1200 mg per day lost some weight. The group taking 1800 mg per day had the largest amount of weight loss.

Keith’s Insight
I have found high dose, Controlled Release alpha-lipoic (ALAmax CR) 2-3 times daily, prior to meals, is effective in reducing peripheral neuropathy (tingling, burning or numbness in toes and feet), lowering blood glucose, controlling appetite and assisting in fat loss.

Traditional alpha-lipoic acid capsules and tablets are not as effective as the newer Controlled Release products. Alpha-lipoic acid from regular release products is eliminated from the body within an hour. ALAmax CR provides longer alpha-lipoic acid retention and activity in the body.

Please let me know if you would like additional information about ALAmax, cardiovascular support or weight management programs.

Consuming 40 grams (gm) of dark chocolate each was associated with a significant reduction in the activation of the inflammatory chemical NF-kappaB which is known to play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

After three weeks of the NF-kappaB decreased significantly in the group of volunteers consuming the dark chocolate mixed in water. NF-kappaB remained the same in the group that consumed the dark chocolate mixed in milk. NF-kappaB increased in the group that consumed no chocolate and drank only milk.

40 grams is about 3 bites of chocolate. You should pick a dark chocolate with at least 60% cacao. Previous medical research studies demonstrate fewer than 3 bites and lower than 60% cacao will not provide cardiovascular, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease prevention.

Zinc supplementation may modify a genetic glucose raising effect for some.

Analysis of 19 medical studies demonstrates that high zinc supplement intake is associated with lower fasting glucose levels. Dietary or food zinc intake did not have an impact on fasting glucose levels. Higher supplement intakes of zinc may lower the glucose raising effect of the genetic zinc transporter variant.
